Mukachiv Stationery

The seat of the NRZU in Mukachiv easily produced the greatest number of postal stationery items. A diagonal, two-line, Ukrainian inscription was adopted for two separate printings. Reading upwards at a 58-degree angle, the overprint was made up solely of capital letters using a serif type. The first printing, using black ink, revalued both 12f and 18f postal cards to —.40 [fillér]. Some 2,000 additional 18f postal cards from Khust also received this overprint.

The second printing, with red ink, again revalued both 12f and 18f 1944-issue postal cards, but this time to 1.— [Pengő], see Figure 14. Both unoverprinted and Khust-overprinted 12f postal cards were transformed as were both message and reply halves of separated 1941-issue 12f double cards (presently not known without the Khust overprint).

Similarly, the red overprint was also applied to 18f postal cards and to 1943-issue 18f double cards (both halves), see Figure 15. All these items may or may not have the Khust ČSP / 1944 marking. (One thousand previously overprinted cards were reported to have been produced.)

(damaged

Red overprints exist in a variety of shades, from light to dark. This is especially noticeable on postal cards numbered 11 and 14 below. Overprint-shifted and overprint-doubled varieties have been recorded (Figure 16). Variations in the dimensions of some of the obliteration bars also exist.

Figure 17. Damaged Oтправитель overprint variety appears on all 18-fillér message cards seen to date.
This variety does not occur on the (so far) only known 12-filler message card.
