Overprinted Hungarian Postal Stationery

The NRZU-overprinted cards were produced from the following eight Hungarian postal stationery items:

12-fillér brown red, single postal card, inscribed LEVELEZŐLAP.
12-fillér brown red, double card (message half), inscribed LEVELEZŐLAP  VALASZLAPPAL /
CARTE POSTALE AVEC RÉPONSE PAYÉE.
12-fillér brown red, double card (reply half), inscribed LEVELEZŐLAP / (VALASZ) /
CARTE POSTALE / (RÉPONSE).
18-fillér dark green, single postal card, inscribed LEVELEZŐLAP.
18-fillér dark green, double card (message half), inscribed LEVELEZŐLAP VALASZLAPPAL /
CARTE POSTALE AVEC RÉPONSE PAYÉE.
18-fillér dark green, double card (reply half), inscribed LEVELEZŐLAP / (VALASZ) /
CARTE POSTALE / (RÉPONSE).
No value, rose field post card (homeland to field), inscribed TÁBORI POSTAI
LEVELEZŐLAP.
No value, gray green field post card (field to homeland), inscribed TÁBORI POSTAI
LEVELEZŐLAP.

All of these cards bear a printer’s imprint reading from bottom to top in the center of the card. The imprint ends with a printing date, which is normally 1941 for the 12-fillér double cards, 1943 for 18-fillér double cards, and 1944 for 12-fillér and 18-fillér single cards and the field post cards.

The printing dates are often covered by the overprint, but can usually be distinguished upon close examination. Some 18-fillér single postal cards have been found with 1943 printing dates (instead of 1944). Further research is required to identify all of the printing dates found on the overprinted cards, since this aspect seems to not have been considered by previous authors.

Quantities of the postal cards and double cards earlier received a local hand overprint of Khust (ČSP / 1944). The double cards were then separated into single message cards and reply cards. All these overprinted cards found little or no use and subsequently received the various NRZU machine overprints along with unoverprinted cards.

The rose field post card (but not the gray green card!) likewise received a handstamped overprint in Khust. This was in the form of a rectangle (35 x 23 mm) containing three lines: Československá pošta / — 18 f. — / Чехословацька пошта.
